Overview

DE is hiring a Fleet Mechanic for a client company in Volusia County.

Under general supervision, the Fleet Mechanic performs skilled diagnostic, maintenance, and repair work on a wide range of vehicles and equipment, including gasoline and diesel engines, heavy-duty trucks, emergency vehicles, construction equipment, and other specialized apparatus. This position ensures the safe and efficient operation of the fleet in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions using computerized tools and manual methods.

  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles.

  • Maintain repair logs, work orders, and inventory records through a fleet management system.

  • Replace or repair defective parts, including brakes, suspension systems, transmissions, HVAC, and fuel systems.

  • Conduct road tests of vehicles to ensure issues are resolved and performance standards are met.

  • Perform welding, fabrication, and bodywork as necessary.

  • Ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards (OSHA, EPA, DOT).

  • Respond to emergency breakdowns in the field as needed.

  • Assist in training lower-level mechanics or apprentices.

  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of the garage and work areas.

Qualifications

 

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Completion of a vocational or technical program in automotive or diesel mechanics preferred.

  • At least 3 years of experience as an automotive or fleet mechanic (municipal or heavy equipment experience preferred).

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid [State] Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or ability to obtain within [X] months of hire.

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications preferred 

  • Air Conditioning Certification (EPA 609) preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel engine systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools.

  • Skilled in the use of tools, equipment, and machinery used in vehicle maintenance and repair.

  • Proficient with computerized fleet maintenance systems.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.


Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Work is performed in a garage setting with exposure to noise, chemicals, fumes, grease, and outdoor elements.

  • Requires standing, bending, lifting (up to 75 lbs), and working in confined or elevated spaces.

  • Must be available for on-call duty, emergency response, and occasional overtime.
